Class of 2023 Spotlight: Laura Calderon Lugo

Laura Calderon Lugo

Alum, NDMU Class of 2023

Doctor of Pharmacy
Laura Calderon Lugo learned earlier this semester that she will be returning to her home in Puerto Rico much sooner than expected. Pharmacy residencies on the island are extremely competitive, with many of the limited opportunities typically offered to students who attend pharmacy school in Puerto Rico. The School of Pharmacy鈥檚 2023 Class President, however, overcame those odds to earn a spot at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Juan beginning this fall.

Ayana Brim 鈥 School of Education

Ayana Brim

Alum, NDMU Class of 2023

Ayana Brim was a vital contributor throughout one of the best three-year stretches in the history of NDMU鈥檚 women鈥檚 basketball program, a run which culminated in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship this winter. During that time period, she put an equal amount of energy into her efforts to become a teacher, including working full-time as a substitute teacher at her K-12 alma mater this semester.

Brenda Rivera 鈥 School of Education

Brenda Rivera

Alum, NDMU Class of 2023

Brenda Rivera worked hard to emphasize the importance of earning a college degree to her three daughters. Rivera had been unable to attend in her younger years due to her family鈥檚 financial difficulties, and she wanted to give her children every opportunity to be successful. Rivera got her wish, with all three of her daughters attending and graduating from college. Later this month she will join them, fulfilling a lifelong dream by graduating from NDMU鈥檚 School of Education.

Ashley Engles

Alum, NDMU Class of 2023

Ashley Engles鈥 goal in life is simple: to be there for people who need help. She will soon have an opportunity to do that on a daily basis after graduating from NDMU鈥檚 School of Nursing later this month. Engles spent the 2022-23 academic year serving as president for NDMU鈥檚 Student Association of Nurses at 海角社区 (SANND). Her role with SANND is one of several initiatives that she has been a part of during her time as a student to support her fellow future nurses.

A two-sport athlete who was a key performer on NDMU's soccer and lacrosse teams during runs to the CSAC tournament, Cesia Diaz also excelled academically throughout her time at 海角社区 while majoring in behavioral neuroscience.

Class of 2023 Spotlight: Rose Sebastian

Rose Sebastian

Alum, NDMU Class of 2023

Doctor of Pharmacy
The 2023 Commencement Ceremony will complete a seven-year journey for Rose Sebastian at NDMU. Sebastian first enrolled in NDMU鈥檚 3+4 program, which allows participants to attend one fewer year of school while earning bachelor鈥檚 and Pharm.D. degrees, back in the fall of 2016. She began her pharmacy coursework three years later after earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology, and she has excelled as one of the top students in 海角社区鈥檚 School of Pharmacy during her time on campus.

Great experience and Opportunity

Juston Summerville

Student, NDMU Class of 2024

海角社区鈥檚 School of Pharmacy has been a great experience and opportunity for me. I started my pharmacy career in 2019 as a Pharmacy Technician at Johns Hopkins Hospital where I met a young pharmacy intern that was in his third year at NDMU. I was impressed with his work ethic, his excitement, and the enthusiasm he had about his future was contagious. He told me all about the resources and opportunities that he enjoyed as a pharmacy student at NDMU, and how excited he was about his future. I applied immediately.

The faculty at NDMU inspire me and give me the tools I need to be the best version of myself. I enjoy the unique classes that allow for hands-on experiences while learning the craft. And at the same time we are afforded the opportunity to serve our community, expand our knowledge, and improve upon our professionalism and confidence. Not only has the NDMU Pharmacy program helped my career grow as a healthcare provider, but as a person as well. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner.

Prepared to Serve

Reem Abdullah

Alum, NDMU Class of 2016

鈥淢y main focus is public health, and I saw firsthand the innovative ways that 海角社区 was giving back to the local community. They don鈥檛 just prepare you to become a successful pharmacist: they are setting you up to use those skills to benefit society.鈥

Hands-on Experience Leads to More Opportunities

Isabella Dallasta

Alum, NDMU Class of 2022

Biology
"The Sr. Alma program had been on my radar ever since I applied to 海角社区. It was great to get in-person experience, speak with doctors, work on projects, and also have my own projects. It has led to countless other opportunities for me moving forward.鈥 鈥 Isabella Dallasta '22, a 2021-22 Sr. Alma Science Year Scholar

A Pharmacist Helping Immigrant Communities

Paola Rivera Mudafort

Alum, NDMU Class of 2022

"What attracted me to go here is the open-door policy of all the professors. These professors not only teach for the School of Pharmacy, but they also have their own practices. Despite their busy schedules, every time I had a question they would make me feel comfortable."

Originally from Puerto Rico, Paola Rivera Mudafort D鈥22 first came to Maryland 10 years ago. As a pharmacist, she wants to use her medical knowledge and ability to speak Spanish to help the immigrant community.
