Jodi-Ann Gayle – School of Pharmacy
Jodi-Ann Gayle
Alum, NDMU Class of 2024
After working for several years as a community pharmacist in her home country of Jamaica, Jodi-Ann Gayle decided to expand her career potential by earning a Pharm.D. degree in the United States. The personalized support provided by professors in NDMU's School of Pharmacy was particularly important to Gayle as she gave birth to her first child midway through the program. The help and flexibility demonstrated by both her professors and her peers allowed her to continue to excel as she balanced her major academic and personal responsibilities.
Alyson Geckle – School of Arts, Sciences and Business
Alyson Geckle
Alum, NDMU Class of 2024
Alyson Geckle was academically driven throughout her time at º£½ÇÉçÇø, and an internship with the Maryland State Police last summer helped confirm that she had chosen the right path as a criminology major. Outside of the classroom, Geckle was a two-sport athlete who successfully transitioned to tennis this spring after two years on the field hockey team. She filled her remaining hours as a member of Omega Phi Alpha, NDMU’s service sorority, serving as the organization’s president for the 2023-24 academic year.
Mackenzie Lookingland – School of Education
Mackenzie Lookingland
Alum, NDMU Class of 2024
Mackenzie Lookingland will be graduating early from NDMU, needing only three years to complete the undergraduate portion of a program which will allow her to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education. Despite the shortened timeframe, Lookingland has filled her schedule with more activities than most students could manage in a typical four-year experience, serving as vice president of NDMU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, president of Gators Teach, and a Resident Advisor in Doyle Hall. In recognition of all her efforts on campus, she was the recipient of the University’s Legacy Award in February.
A Personalized Learning Environment
Shadawn Scott Simmons
Student, NDMU Class of 2025
Family Nurse Practitioner
The faculty is exceptional, providing engaging instruction and invaluable real-world insights. There’s an emphasis on hands-on clinical training, with amazing simulation experiences. NDMU also finds clinical sites for students - something many FNP programs don't offer. I love the supportive, personalized learning environment. I believe the program is comprehensively preparing me for a rewarding career as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
A Supportive Atmosphere
Shanze Gamble
Student, NDMU Class of 2025
Family Nurse Practitioner
Two things that drew me to NDMU were the opportunity for in-person instruction and the program’s assistance in finding clinical placements. I’ve enjoyed my experience here – the School of Nursing provides students with support and flexible scheduling to allow us to balance full-time job responsibilities and our education.
Filling a Need
Carrie Davis
Student, NDMU Class of 2025
Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
I have been a nurse for nearly 20 years, including eight years in the ambulatory setting. I hear firsthand how patients are struggling to find primary care providers. As a nurse practitioner, I will be able to work with patients to help meet that need.
Marissa Vaughn – School of Nursing
Marissa Vaughn
Alum, NDMU Class of 2023
After 10 years working in early childhood education, Marissa Vaughn was ready for a career change. She felt that she had gone as far as she could in the profession, and she was ready to try something new. That desire to shake things up led Vaughn back to a previous childhood desire to become a nurse. Fast forward four years, and she is one step closer towards achieving that goal when she graduates with honors from NDMU with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing later this month.
Gabrielle Taganas – School of Arts, Sciences and Business
Gabrielle Taganas
Alum, NDMU Class of 2023
Gabrielle Taganas is a two-time All-CSAC performer who has helped the volleyball program compete for championships in each of her three seasons with the Gators. Her NDMU experience, though, extends well beyond the volleyball court. Her role as president of º£½ÇÉçÇø's Business & Economics Society, along with affiliations with the Morrissy Honors Program and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helps Taganas maintain a close connection with campus life while attending º£½ÇÉçÇø as a commuter student.
Class of 2023 Spotlight: Laura Calderon Lugo
Laura Calderon Lugo
Alum, NDMU Class of 2023
Doctor of Pharmacy
Laura Calderon Lugo learned earlier this semester that she will be returning to her home in Puerto Rico much sooner than expected. Pharmacy residencies on the island are extremely competitive, with many of the limited opportunities typically offered to students who attend pharmacy school in Puerto Rico. The School of Pharmacy’s 2023 Class President, however, overcame those odds to earn a spot at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Juan beginning this fall.
Ayana Brim – School of Education
Ayana Brim
Alum, NDMU Class of 2023
Ayana Brim was a vital contributor throughout one of the best three-year stretches in the history of NDMU’s women’s basketball program, a run which culminated in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship this winter. During that time period, she put an equal amount of energy into her efforts to become a teacher, including working full-time as a substitute teacher at her K-12 alma mater this semester.
