BALTIMORE, Md. – ’s School of Education has partnered with the Maryland State Department of Education on the first state-sponsored Registered Teaching Apprenticeship Program, providing a pathway for apprentices to earn a degree.

NDMU is one of only three university partners statewide selected to support apprentices in earning a Bachelor of Arts in education and becoming licensed educators. At NDMU, apprentices will have access to a fully online degree program, opportunities to earn credit for on-the-job experience, and the option to earn multiple certifications in critical teacher-shortage areas, such as special education and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). The state’s largest private producer of newly certified teachers, NDMU’s School of Education prepares students to address the learning needs of all children with a focus on differentiated instructional strategies.

“NDMU’s School of Education is proud to partner with the Maryland Department of Education to address the state’s teacher shortage, while breaking down barriers for individuals to earn a college degree and begin a rewarding career in education,” said Dr. Juliann Dupuis, dean of the NDMU School of Education. “The state’s Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program will ultimately expand the teacher workforce by making a college education more accessible and setting up apprentices for success in the field.”

Unlike traditional educator preparation programs, aspiring teachers in the state’s program will receive hands-on training, mentorship, and paid work experience while limiting their out-of-pocket cost and debt to earn a degree and teaching license. Approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council, the program was developed in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland State Education Association, and Maryland Department of Labor. , the program is expected to enroll its first cohort in Caroline and Washington counties in early 2026, and once fully scaled, it will welcome participants from across the state.

“The state’s Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Program revolutionizes teacher preparation,” said Dr. Lisa Pallett, associate dean of the NDMU School of Education. “With their on-the-job training, apprentices will apply what they learn in the classroom to their academic coursework from the very beginning, honing their skills to become effective educators.”
