NDMU Community Gathers for Plant It! 2023

Thanks to each of the 77 volunteers from the NDMU community who combined to plant over 3,000 flowers across campus during Plant It! 2023 on April 27. NDMU's student team, the Petal Pushers, took first place for planting the most flowers at this year's event, with Make Some Noyes and the Business Office following closely behind.

WBAL-TV Feature: NDMU's Elevates Program Helps Paraeducators Become Certified Teachers

WBAL-TV 11 recently interviewed Dr. Kathy Doherty, dean of NDMU's School of Education, and program participants for a feature highlighting NDMU's new innovative degree apprenticeship program to help paraeducators earn their teaching certification. NDMU's Elevates Program, funded by a nearly $250,000 state grant, is being implemented through partnerships with John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore and the Harbour School in Annapolis.

Renaissance Institute Members Presented with Legacy Awards

NDMU's Renaissance Institute recently honored three outstanding volunteers with legacy awards that carry a year’s free membership. This year’s award ceremony on April 18 attracted 70 members for a lunch which celebrated the winners.

The Reidy Award was presented to Susan Serotte for “working tirelessly, and what might appear thanklessly, behind the scenes to support the programs and activities of the Renaissance Institute." The 2023 Renaissance Unsung Hero, Susan also chairs the Summer and Winter in the City Programs Committee. The Father Joseph Connolly Award, which recognizes leadership, outstanding and long service, generosity of spirit, and active participation in the Renaissance Institute, was presented to Amanda Joyce, Chair of the Renaissance Communications Committee and a popular classroom instructor.

The Renaissance Social Committee’s creativity and commitment adds immeasurably to the community spirit, and its chair, Beverly Fransen, received the Director’s Award for her innate concern for others and extraordinary support of the Renaissance Institute, its staff, and its members.

The Renaissance Institute relies upon the dedicated volunteerism of its members in assuring that the lifelong learning program remains relevant and inviting to its membership. Post COVID, Renaissance now offers fully 50% of its course offerings on Zoom or in a hybrid format, while another 150 members enjoy being back on campus for learning opportunities.

School of Arts, Sciences and Business

On April 27, the English Department hosted its annual English Tea, Sigma Tau Delta induction ceremony, Alpha Psi Omega induction ceremony, and Damozel launch. The induction ceremony was hosted by the Sigma Tau chapter officers: April Boss, President; Tahreem Haq, Vice President; and Erika Smith, Treasurer. The Alpha Psi ceremony was hosted by Hermione Riggs, President. Two students were inducted into Sigma Tau, the International English Honor Society: Natalie Newton and Cassandra Thompson. Two were inducted into Alpha Psi, the Drama Honor Society: Caitlin Cottrill and Angelina Moree. The Damozel Launch was hosted by co-editors Tahreem Haq and April Boss. Two students read from their publications in Damozel, the campus literary magazine: Caitlin Cottrill and Janet Thompson. Dr. Jeana DelRosso, Sister Maura Eichner Endowed Professor of English, was an invited speaker in May at the Saint Mary’s College (South Bend, Indiana) Alumnae Association Board of Directors Spirituality Hour. The Zoom alumnae event was based on her latest book, , published by SUNY Press.

School of Education

NDMU's School of Education was featured at the 2023 American Educational Research Association’s annual meeting, which was held on-site in Chicago from April 13-16. Seven faculty, alumnae, and students presented research on a variety of topics during the four-day renowned conference, which typically features over 2,600 sessions and 15,000 attendees. The theme for this year’s event was “Interrogating Consequential Education Research in Pursuit of Truth.” 

The AERA is the largest national interdisciplinary research association devoted to the scientific study of education and learning. The organization has over 25,000 members, and its annual meeting is designed to showcase research efforts from across the educational spectrum. The full list of NDMU presentations at the conference, listed in the order they were presented, is available below:

School of Pharmacy

Congratulations to all School of Pharmacy students who were recognized at the Phi Lambda Sigma Induction Ceremony on April 29! In addition to formally welcoming new members to the national Pharmacy Leadership Society, the event celebrated all PLS fourth-year students receiving their graduation honor cords. Marielie Carrasquillo-Rivera D’24 was also recognized as the chapter’s Member of the Year.
