NDMU News
Commencement 2019
Commencement 2019 is this weekend at Baltimore鈥檚 Royal Farms Arena.
Doors to the arena will open at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 19. The processional will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will formally begin at 11 a.m.
Kelly launched the WOW festival in London in 2010 to mark the centennial of International Women鈥檚 Day. Since then, WOW has become a major global festival that celebrates women and girls and looks at the obstacles they face. For more on Kelly and what she has accomplished check out the news section of the website.
In addition to Kelly, senior Kashay Webb will serve as the 2019 student speaker.

Lacrosse Wins CSAC Championship
BIG congratulations to 海角社区鈥檚 Lacrosse Team. Our Gators are the Colonial States Athletic Conference Champions. In addition, the team played in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, facing off against Westminster College (Pa) at Gettysburg College on May 11. The Gators held strong, keeping the game close in the first half, but Westminster stepped it up and ended up defeating NDMU 16-8.
NDMU finished the season 11-6 overall and 7-3 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). This was the Gators first CSAC Championship and NCAA lacrosse appearance.
Partners in Mission
Several faculty and staff members were recently honored at NDMU鈥檚 annual Partners in Mission Celebration.
The event celebrates service anniversaries and connects us with the vision of our founders, the School Sisters of 海角社区, the University鈥檚 Mission and the women and men who make our Mission a reality.

Research Day 2019
On April 26, Fourier Hall became a space for papers to be presented and posters to be explained. It was all part of Nancy Kreiter Research Day, a day which showcases the best and the brightest at 海角社区. This year there were more than 70 submissions.
Dr. Amy Rosenkrans, a graduate of both CND and NDMU who currently works with Baltimore city middle school students, gave the Opening Speech and participated as a guest judge.
The Nancy Kreiter Student Research Day concluded with a celebration, complete with awards for the best presentations in each of the divisions and a dessert reception.

New Trees on Campus
You may have noticed some new scenery around campus recently. TriBeta (or TreeBeta as it is affectionately known) held three events this semester designed to beautify NDMU鈥檚 campus.
The first two events were geared towards tree maintenance, where trees previously planted by TreeBeta are re-mulched, re-fertilized and pruned. Mother nature didn鈥檛 cooperate for the first event and it was a soggy mess, but students prevailed. The weather was much better for the second maintenance event and a lot was accomplished.
As for the third TreeBeta event, students worked with grounds supervisor Kelly Harrison to plant four new trees next to Loop Road, as it passes in front of Doyle Hall. To see more pictures go to .
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
NDMU Facilities in conjunction with The Planeteers, NDMU鈥檚 student environmental group is beginning a refocused effort on enhancing the school鈥檚 recycling program.
- Recycling will be picked up weekly from recycling containers. Only recyclable items are to be placed in these bins.
- If you have cardboard for recycling, please break it down and place it next to the recycling containers.
- Recycling pick-up will take place on Wednesdays (afternoon/evening) and Saturdays only.
In an effort to educate the campus about what can, and cannot be recycled, The Planeteers have been putting up posters around campus.
Among the most common items than cannot be recycled:
- Plastic bags
- Paper napkins, plates, tissues
- Foam cups and to-go containers
Any recycling bins found with trash in them will cause the entire bin to be considered as trash, and discarded as such. All non-recycling items will continue to be collected as normal and taken to the trash compactor.

Teachers of Promise
Congratulations to this year's Teachers of Promise! Grace Park, Donielle DeToy, Taylor Burnett, Atoya Hill, Iyabo Adeleye, Aimee Scott and Nina Corrieri were selected based on their high academic standing and strong potential to be an outstanding teacher.
As part of this program these teacher candidates, who will be mentored by outstanding educators such as Blue Ribbon School Principals, County and Maryland Teachers of the Year, and Milken award winners were invited to attend the 12thannual TOP Institute. While there, they were able to meet many leaders in education, including the state superintendent.
At the event, NDMU鈥檚 SOE Dean, Dr. Gary Thrift, won the top prize of the day, a SMART Board valued at approximately $8,000, for use in the School of Education.
Rice Bowl Collection
A big thank you to the NDMU community for its contributions to the CRS Rice Bowls. This year during the Lenten season, mission & ministry was able to collect$167.19 for CRS. CRS Rice Bowl collection is a faith-in-action program that invites people to encounter the needs of the world.

Faculty Accomplishments
Congratulation to Mark Fenster and Sr. Mary Fitzgerald on their first round faculty vote to the CFRD Committee and to Ryan Schaaf for his election to the Information and Educational Technology Committee.
School of Education Dean, Gary Thrift recently completed his first ever bike tour. He took part in the 30thannual Ocean to Bay Bike Tour which was 37 miles long.
Dr. Angelo Letizia recently presented at the 鈥淏atman in Popular Culture鈥 Conference at Bowling Green State University.
Dr. Katherine Beauchat gave a successful presentation at the 50thAnniversary Massachusetts Reading Association annual conference in Quincy. She spoke to early childhood educators, reading specialists, and literacy coaches regarding strategies to support young children's oral language and vocabulary development.
Ryan Schaaf, Assistant Professor of Educational Technology, just released his fifth book, A Brief History of the Future of Education: Learning in the Age of Disruption through Corwin Press. The book was showcased on Amazon鈥檚 list of Hot New Releases (Best-selling new or future releases) for more than a month.

Kappa Delta Pi 2019 Induction Ceremony
Congratulations to the newest member of the Phi Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, NDMU's International Honors Society in Education. The members were inducted in Marikle Chapel last month with a reception following in Murphy Gathering Space.

To celebrate Nurses Week and our graduating seniors, students prepared a simulation for faculty. The students really showcased what they鈥檝e learned and came up with great simulation scenario.

Call for volunteers from Govans
Govans is looking for 8-10 volunteers for Math and Literacy Night which is being held on May 23rd, 2019 from 2:30-5 p.m. The volunteers help out by playing games with the students from 2-3 p.m. and then with the distribution of the pizza dinner from 4:30-5:00 p.m.
