Maryland鈥檚 Only Art Therapy Master鈥檚 Program Earns National Accreditation

海角社区鈥檚 Master of Arts in Art Therapy program was awarded initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), completing another significant milestone for the only master's program in Maryland that prepares graduates to become professional art therapists.

The CAAHEP accreditation process is designed to ensure that art therapy programs meet the rigorous standards required to position students for success after graduation. Initial CAAHEP accreditation is valid for a period of eight years. Launched in 2018, NDMU's master's program requires 1,000 hours of clinical instruction and a thesis project integrating research and field experiences.

Nursing Students Travel to Virginia Beach for NSNA MidYear Conference

A group of seven nursing students recently had the opportunity to network with leaders and colleagues from across the country at the National Student Nurses鈥 Association (NSNA) MidYear Conference in Virginia Beach.

The trip, which was sponsored by NDMU鈥檚 School of Nursing, included an extensive NCLEX-RN Mini Review course, professional workshops, and career panels with experts from a variety of specialty areas. NDMU鈥檚 contingent included Mary Clare Callahan 鈥24, Michaela Cousins 鈥23, Ashley Engles 鈥23, Yvonne Godwin 鈥23, Rachel Maj 鈥23, Manroop Sandhu 鈥23 and Sydney Smith 鈥23.

NDMU鈥檚 School of Education Receives 7-year Program Accreditation

NDMU鈥檚 School of Education received full seven-year accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), recognizing its continuing excellence in preparing educators to reach their highest potential in the profession. CAEP is a unified accreditation system intent on raising the performance of all institutions focused on educator preparation.

鈥淥ne of the most meaningful aspects of the CAEP accreditation process is the opportunity to come together as a school to engage in reflection and self-study while we celebrate areas of excellence and identify opportunities for improvement that will make the School of Education stronger, more effective, and more able to meet the increasing needs of changing educator and student populations,鈥 said Dr. Kathryn Doherty, dean of NDMU鈥檚 School of Education. 鈥淏y aligning ourselves with national standards and benchmarks, we can best achieve the school and University mission to serve our communities and transform lives through education.鈥

NDMU to Host Northeast Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on December 3

Four of NDMU's Ethics Bowl team members

Teams of undergraduate students from across the region will gather at NDMU on Saturday, December 3 to discuss ethical issues related to some of today鈥檚 most pressing topics as part of the Northeast Regional Ethics Bowl. 

海角社区 will be hosting the Northeast regional for a second-consecutive year. Last year鈥檚 group of NDMU students advanced to the national competition for the first time in school history after posting a top-three finish at regionals. This year鈥檚 team includes Raechel Bauer, Rebecca Becraft, Nana Fremah Nyarko, Nana Agyemang-Duah (alternate), Anisah Khattak (alternate) and Tinsaye Kirub (alternate).

Internationally Renowned Bread & Puppet Theater to Perform at NDMU

Bread and Puppet Theater's Fall 2022 cross-country tour is coming to NDMU on Friday, December 9! This will be the group's only performance in Baltimore during the tour. The band will begin playing in LeClerc Theatre at 7:40 pm, while the show gets underway at 8 pm. Attendance is open to the general public and all members of the NDMU community.

Baltimore Collegetown Extends Application Deadline for Underground Initiative

In its seventh year, Collegetown Underground is a focused, immersive opportunity for college students to explore the Baltimore area outside the classroom. Just 30 students are selected to participate and in four days, you will deepen your connection with the inspiring community where you live and study. The application deadline has been extended to Friday, December 2.

Student/Faculty/Staff Updates

Four members of the NDMU community are included among the newest Associates of the School Sisters of 海角社区. Associates make a covenant to live the spirit and mission of the SSNDs through deepening personal and communal prayer, participating in SSND spiritual, educational, and social activities, extending the spirit of SSND in her/his respective ministry/lifestyle, and sharing one鈥檚 gifts, faith, life, and lived experiences with SSNDs and other Associates.

New Associates include Kristyanna Erickson (associate professor in NDMU's math, physics and computer studies department), Jean Marie Hofstetter (undergraduate academic advisor), Kelley Kilduff (vice president for institutional advancement and communications), and Angela Sherman (former professor in NDMU's chemistry department). School of Arts, Sciences & Business

Geoff Delanoy, professor and department chair of NDMU's art department, was in a Chestertown Spy article. His series of photographs, Ghost Forest, is currently on display at Adkins Arboretum in Caroline County through December 23.

Cathy Goucher, associate professor department chair of NDMU's art therapy department, and Renee van der Stelt '23 were both recently featured in a Catholic News Service article titled "Therapists: Art can help people share feelings they can鈥檛 put into words." They discuss the growth of the profession and the unique benefits that art therapy can provide to patients. 

School of Education

Ryan Schaaf, associate professor of Educational Technology, presented at the 10th annual Common Ground conference in Ocean City, MD. He presented three featured keynote sessions, which included Reinventing for the Always-On Generation, A Brief History of the Future of Education, and Learner Choice, Learner Voice.

School of Nursing

Eight graduates were acknowledged in the recent What鈥檚 Up Annapolis 2022-2023 Excellence in Nursing issue. Lillian Banchero M'14, Devra Cockerille M'14, Melanie Lee M'14, Jean Little M'19, Rebecca Raico M'14, Lynn Thomas '15 M'18, Daniel Watkins '16 M'19 and Linda Weiss '11 are all currently employed by Luminis Anne Arundel Medical Center. Local nurses practicing in Anne Arundel, Prince George鈥檚, Queen Anne鈥檚, Kent, Talbot, and Dorchester counties were called upon to nominate and, therefore, honor the most commendable of their peers in the field, in more than 15 areas of specialty for the issue.
